WWL – the Worthless Writeup Library

launched on 2024-08

The WWL is yet another experiment in taking away my excuses from writing up stuff I work on. With any luck, you’re reading it right now!

This website is supposed to hold small reports on various projects, setups, and other time sinks I end up working on. The plan is to set my own expectations as of the quality of what I post here very low, so I can comfortably continue documentation without worrying whether it’s “interesting enough”. Trying to filter myself just ends up filtering out most things and then having no place nor habit to publish the stuff that actually might be worth talking about. Hence the somewhat pessimistic name, and my avoidance of calling it a “blog”*. I hope to build up the momentum for interesting things by practicing on crappy userscripts and personal automations.

On the technical side, I’m setting it up using Hugo. Why? I don’t want to use WordPress, my ideal of just cooking up something bespoke would just stall this dependent project (and this project is all about removing such excuses, after all!), and I heard some things about Hugo, some even good! I rarely participate in Trend Driven Development, might as well take this opportunity to do so. If this ends up not working out, Markdown should be easy enough to migrate to something else.

Does this idea work? Well, if you’re reading this, that means that not only did I write enough initially to actually put this up online, but also I haven’t yet left this to rot to the point where I’d become embarrassed and just took it down. So, I suppose?

* I’m too young to have seriously used blogs in the “teenager’s LiveJournal” sense, so my standards for “blog” are mostly set by technical blogs (high).
